If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to take part in a guided 4WD adventure tour through Western Australia, you’re not alone. Many of our guests come with curiosity, not expertise. Some have never driven off-road before. Others are seasoned travellers, but new to this kind of self-drive exploration. What they all share is a willingness to get involved, take things slower, and see parts of the state that don’t show up on standard itineraries.
At Proudback, we specialise in small-group 4×4 adventure tours in Western Australia that combine remote landscapes, local insight, and just the right amount of support. This isn’t a tag-along convoy or a crowded tour bus but a hands-on, guided journey with room to breathe.
A different kind of travel experience
Our tours are designed to be immersive and practical with your party being fully involved in the process. From checking tyre pressure in the morning to setting up your swag at night, the trip invites you to engage wholeheartedly with the landscape and the rhythm of life on the track. We keep our groups small so that every traveller gets time, space, and individual guidance when needed.
Whether you’re joining one of our scheduled outback tour departures or booking a custom itinerary through our tailor-made outback tour offering, every 4WD adventure starts with preparation. Before we hit the road, we take you through a practical session on vehicle handling, basic off-road skills, and how to get the most out of your setup. No previous 4×4 experience is needed. You’ll be driving a fully equipped LandCruiser that’s built for WA’s toughest terrain and we make sure you’re confident in how to use it.
Terrain you won’t reach any other way
Western Australia’s remote regions aren’t just far away but they’re also physically difficult to access without the right vehicle, route knowledge, and preparation. And, let’s be honest, that’s part of the appeal.
On a typical Proudback adventure, you might cross the rugged tracks of Dirk Hartog Island, navigate the limestone escarpments of Wooleen Station, or follow the coastline near Steep Point—where dolphins surface close to shore and wedge-tailed eagles glide overhead. These are the places we know well, and we plan each leg of the journey around the conditions, group ability, and time of year.
Every Proudback tour is guided by experienced operators with deep local knowledge. We’re not following someone else’s itinerary. Even if you join one of our three main tour itineraries, the details can be adjusted according to your needs. We might add a stop, skip another, or change the pace depending on the group and conditions. And because it’s a guided tour, there’s always someone close who knows the route, understands the risks, and knows what to do if something doesn’t go to plan.
Meals, camp life and the flow of the day
We travel with everything we need, which means we cook, sleep, and reset each day as a group. Some nights are spent around the fire with a meal made from what we’ve carried or picked up along the way, such as local beef, fresh vegetables, a good tin of something practical. Other nights might include a stop at a station stay, where a hot meal and a cold drink are part of your adventure.
You’ll sleep in a swag every night, a weatherproof canvas bedroll with built-in mattress and plenty of space to stretch out. Some camps are wild and remote, others have access to basic amenities but all of them offer the same quiet reset from the world you’ve left behind.
Each morning, you’ll pack down, check over the vehicle, and head out for the next leg. Driving isn’t rushed. There’s always time for unplanned stops, a lookout, or a slow lunch in the shade of the vehicle. The aim is to experience the route, the company, and the small details that most travellers miss.
Group dynamics that work
Because we only take a few vehicles on each departure, the atmosphere stays relaxed and personal. There’s no need to compete for the guide’s attention or crowd around for instructions. Everyone gets the space to learn, contribute, and travel in a way that suits their pace.
Some guests travel with their partners. Others travel in groups of friends, or families. What brings people together is the shared desire to do something more involved than a typical tour, and to come away with a deeper sense of where they’ve been.
Ready for the road less travelled?
If you’re considering one of our 4WD adventure tours, you don’t need to be a seasoned four-wheel driver or an experienced camper. You just need to be open to something real. Our trips are structured to support first-timers and to challenge more experienced travellers in equal measure.
Proudback’s 4×4 tours in Western Australia are all about connection—to place, to pace, and to a way of travelling that leaves you more confident and clear-headed than when you started.
